You’ve probably heard terms like life insurance or critical illness insurance… but sometimes people call them protection. Are they the same thing?
In financial planning, the two words often get used interchangeably — but they’re not quite identical. Here’s a quick overview (and remember, a chat with us will give you tailored advice — for free).
Income Protection
-
Replaces a percentage of your income (typically 50–70%) if you can’t work due to illness or injury
-
Pays monthly, like a salary
-
Can last until retirement, or for a fixed term (e.g. 2 or 5 years)
-
Especially valuable if you’re self-employed or only get limited sick pay
Why it matters: Your ability to earn is probably your biggest financial asset. If illness strikes, income protection keeps the bills paid without draining your savings.
Life Insurance
-
Pays out a lump sum if you pass away during the policy term
-
Helps your family cover the mortgage, living costs, or future education
-
Two main types:
-
Level term: fixed payout
-
Decreasing term: payout reduces over time (often linked to a repayment mortgage)
-
Why it matters: If others rely on you financially, life insurance helps safeguard their stability if the worst happens.
Critical Illness Cover: The “In-Between” Support
Pays a tax-free lump sum if you’re diagnosed with a serious illness listed in your policy (like cancer, heart attack, or stroke).
-
Can be standalone or added to life cover
-
The money is flexible: treatment costs, adapting your home, taking time off work, or simply breathing space
Why it matters: It bridges the gap – you’re alive, but you may not be able to work, and recovery takes time. It’s peace of mind during a difficult period, without needing to rush back to work before you’re ready.
Final thought: Tailored Protection is better than guesswork
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Each cover serves a different purpose, and together, they form a strong foundation for your financial wellbeing.
As an advisor, my role is to help you figure out what matters most to you – whether that’s protecting your family, your lifestyle, or your future self.
